Twitter Has Lost its Virginity

Sweet little twitter has officially gotten in bed with rich media content.  You may not see it in your area yet, but soon everyone will.  Partnering up with other heavy weights such as YouTube, Yahoo Flickr, and Vimeo – and even the bantam weights like deviantART, Etsy, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, Ustream and yfrog.

The new two-column design is a fresh, update on the little micro-blogging platform that could.  Click a tweet on the left side, and a pane slides out, displaying the video or image.  The rich details pane also contains any content related to that tweet, such as replies, other Tweets, it’s geotag, and user details.  Personally my favourite addition; they’ve done away with clicking ‘more’ to view additional tweets, and have embraced the infinite scroll.  Facebook: take note.

Up to now, in my mind, Twitter has been the Forrest Gump of the social media world.  It was a simple idea, it didn’t have a lot going for it and early on it didn’t have it’s act together, but the world embraced it and it continued on gallivanting through cyberspace and growing in popularity.

But then it started growing up.  Last spring it took a page out of Google’s guide to world domination, and mimicked its advertising platform by allowing sponsored tweets. It’s also recently released powerful iPhone and iPad applications that are making redundant the use of third party desktop / mobile apps. Smash those apples with this most recent update, and Twitter is now a force to be reckoned with.

So just how big is this little bird’s pecker? We’ll just have to wait and find out. If you’re not one of the few who have the new Twitter check out the video below for a peak at the birds new beak!
