Sometimes I need a creative push in the copy department. A little inspiration to get my fingers typing. Yes, I look at ads, but what really helps my writing is reading pithy, catchy, funny writing. Here are my top 5 spots for copywriting inspiration.
1.Groupon
Yes, I know it’s today’s version of spam and trust I am Grouponed out, but the writing is great. The descriptions are funny and quirky. No wonder they have a staff of real writers. This is a site that gets it. They get the value of copywriting, so few websites do.
Gotta love their catchy headlines. They sum up every article with the most outlandish remark. Huff-Po (as huff-po followers call it), is somewhere between a tabloid and a newspaper. They inspire me to keep it short and make it punchy.
3.learnsomethingeveryday.co.uk
Quirky drawings paired with funny lines. It’s a recipe for laughs. Create daily by a UK design studio, Learn Something Everyday reminds me to keep my craft lighthearted and that all copy lines are better with art direction.
To stay up on news terms and to broaden my vocabulary I look to newswordy. It’s not often these words make their way into our ads, but I am always up-to-date on my buzzwords.
5. hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com
To get into a storytelling mood I turn to Hyperbole and a Half. Every tale is told in comic book style through the eyes of a little girl who is a lot insane. While the drawings may be crude, the storytelling is genius. You actually feel like you are the main character. Every piece transports you back to a time when birthday cake was magical and dogs were a mystery.
Here’s my favourite one: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/10/god-of-cake.html
So do you have any go-to well-written sites, tweets or blogs worth sharing? I’m always looking for inspiration.
