It’s a long dark winter here in Toronto, punctuated by the odd snowstorm (that everyone freaks out about) and cold waits for the TTC (that people don’t freak out about enough). By the time the days start getting longer and we’re able to shed a few layers, April gives us the chance to feel like ourselves again.
My favourite 5 things about being in the city here and now…
Blue Jays Home Opener
Ok, so that’s a gimme. Not only did we give a sound 13-3 whooping to the Twins in this year’s opener on April 1, our boys were off to a smoking start. Ok, ok, so we dropped a couple close ones to the A’s and Angels and yes, it was an embarrassing series against the Mariners. But, there’s a vibe in the clubhouse that hasn’t been there in years. And we’ve got some good solid talent out there. All we need now are starters who can get us into the later innings. Dashboard sez… Go Jays!
Patio season
Start scoping the best spots now cause a few more warm days will officially get us underway. There are a lot more to choose from in the city these days, from the old stand-by’s (Black Bull, Julie’s, Allen’s) to the hidden backyard gems (Utopia on College, Fat Cat on Roncey) to the upstairs delights (Cafe Nervosa, Czehoski). Or just play the numbers and stroll down West Queen West, Baldwin Street or the Distillery District and find one of many great spots to plunk down.
Hot Docs
I love this festival!! If you have any curiosity at all about people, places or things, you have to check out this year’s line-up. You can expect a huge selection of films (over 200, from 43 countries) and an organized, friendly vibe throughout the 11-day festival. A few from my must-see list… National Parks Project; Buck; Grinders. April 28 – May 8.
Green Living Show
Face it, green is big and getting bigger, and the size and scale of this event from year to year reflects that reality. (Past participation by the likes of Bill Clinton and Colin Firth doesn’t hurt either). From barn floor furniture to milk-based paint to e-bikes, check out all the ways that you can make choices that are both smart and stylish. April 15-17.

Riverdale Farm Spring Clean-up
If you’re a condo dweller who longs to play in a big garden of your own, why not help the good people at Riverdale Farm prep their digs for the start of the season? Help is enthusiastically welcomed from the public and if you’re handy with a rake, you’ll be king (or queen)! April 16 9:30-11:30am.
