Mark your calendars guys – next Monday is October 31st, an awesome time of the year to have some fun, get a bit crazy and show off your unique style. Oh I’m not talking about Halloween. Nope. The disguise I’m referring to only involves a miniature pair of scissors and a good sense of humour. I’m talking about the first day of Movember.

You must have heard about it by now. Conceived in 1999, implemented in 2004 and active in Canada in 2007, Movember is a month-long event where participants grow a moustache for the month of November. The idea is to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer. The initiative first started in Australia in 2004 where 450 participants raised $54,000 towards prostate cancer research. Jump ahead to 2010, with advancements in communication, particularly social media, 450,000 participants worldwide raised an astounding $81 million!

The cause relies on a lot more than the facial hair of the ‘Mo Bros’. ‘Mo Sistas’ are those who are strong supporters of the initiative. They donate time and funds, organize events and promote awareness. Movember couldn’t be successful without them.

I’ve been a Mo Bro for the past two years. Sure I look pretty ridiculous by the end of the month (only a bit more than I do during any other month) but it’s for a great cause. With 1 in 6 men being diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, growing a Mo is the least I can do to help out.

So whatever your style; the Fu Manchu, the classic Tom Selleck or the legendary Ron Burgundy, this Movember set the razor in the cabinet and let the whiskers flow. Become a Mo bro or Mo sista this Movember and help cure cancer! Register now at Movember.com.
