There’s been a lot of touch-screen talk around the office lately so I thought I would catch up with the guys at 3Di Solutions to get their two cents on the subject. 3Di Solutions creates interactive 3D experiences in every size and every dimension and Dashboard has partnered with them on a number of projects.
DB: What was 3Di’s most recent touchscreen project?
3Di: Most recently we created a 42″ touchscreen for Evergreen Brickworks. We had an interesting challenge to create an interactive donor wall which would showcase where and how sponsorship helped contribute to build a Platinum LEED certified building. Our solution was to build an interactive 3D map which users could navigate and explore the site and the sponsors.
DB: What is the most challenging part of developing touchscreen work for clients?
3Di: There are two fundamental yet connected challenges: Cost and Vision. Our greatest example of failure of insight is those tiny, postage stamp like televisions with a website piped onto it. In our estimation, a touchscreen needs to be properly integrated in size, placement and content, which often pushes up cost and requires custom installation solutions.
DB: What do you see in the future? Will our boardroom tables be interactive soon?
3Di: Boardroom tables will be interactive – but not soon. Touchscreen are still viewed as disruptive technologies which means they do not typically have budgets associated for their purchase of staff members capable of content development and maintenance.
DB: What in your opinion is the best implementation of a touch experience by a brand?
3Di: Hands down, the iPhone. It’s amazing how a computer manufacturer can enter the cell phone market and take it by storm. It’s a perfect mesh of super robust technology coupled with a fantastic interface – it was first and it set the bar high.
DB: Send me a link to the coolest interactive touch experience you’ve ever seen.

Thanks guys! We here at Dashboard are super excited about the future of touchscreens. And if you haven’t seen this video yet by Corning on “A Day Made of Glass” check it out!
