Dashboard was recently tasked to freshen up Toyota’s Red Tag campaign creative. We explored several options, and thought it would be fun to parody big things together. Out of this whimsical notion, emerged Sasquatch! That’s right I said it. A Big Sasquatch holding an equally big Red Tag. Big things like big things.
Once the video voken and online media ad concept was approved, we were off to the races. We reached out and enlisted the help of the Sugino Studio Crew who were completely amped to shoot Sasquatch for our campaign. We began the very next day.
It was a very hands on shoot. Once I arrived on set I introduced myself to the Director Eden Robbins and Executive Producer Andy Mcloed. Andy a naturally big guy, stood in as our Sasquatch for the day. Once Eden and I went over the storyboards and discussed how we could make certain shots work, we then briefed the crew for our opening shot sequence of Sasquatch pacing back and forth. The goal was to time it right so when Sasquatch reached the middle of the floor, he would turn to face the camera and in a startled effort, run out of frame. The sequence would eventually be used in a leaderboard banner.
We continued shooting various angles, positions and gestures over green screen with a REDcam in full HD. We could usually get about 2-3 takes in before Andy would have to escape that sauna of a costume.
All-in-all the day was a hit. In a few short hours we had captured all of the required shots as well as some odds and ends stuff. The costume which had been acquired through a CBC wardrobe sale had two left feet. Thankfully it didn’t pose many issues.
Here are a few things I took away from that day:
- Anything is possible, however when you’re shooting live action sequences for the web, be aware of your media dimensions. If it’s shot too tight, you can’t repurpose for all ad sizes.
- Also from a conceptual standpoint, sketching the tightest storyboard doesn’t always paint the final picture. A lot of the magic really does happen on the set.
