3D – Minus the Cool Glasses.

3D Hologram - Dashboard

3D technology has exploded over the last couple years with movies, television and video games. Even here at Dashboard we’ve created two 3D websites, one for 3M Filtrete Filters and the other for the Ontario Toyota Dealers Parts & Service, but they all have one thing in common: they require 3D glasses. And as cool as those glasses look they may not be a requirement in the near future.

Zebra Imaging (a holographic printing company out of Austin Texas) is producing 3D holographic digital prints which are reminiscent of something out of Star Wars. The prints at first glance look like a flat piece of plastic until illuminated by light, and then they really come to life. Rising from the flat surface are detailed 3D buildings, pipe systems and topographical maps, no glasses required. If that wasn’t cool enough the prints provide a complete 360 view, as if the hologram was an actual physical model changing perspective as you move around the display. This provides architects and engineers with an easy to transport, less expensive alternative to physical scale model of any given project. It’s also no surprise that Zebras biggest client is the US military which uses the technology for mapping terrain, providing troops with a full 3D view of the area they are about to be deployed in.

Take a look for yourself; this is definitely one of the coolest things I’ve seen in awhile.
